About Us
The Agricultural Genomics and Proteomics Unit (AGP Unit) is a centralized resource possessing sophisticated and complex equipment and technologies that are available for use by members of the research community. The core facility provides access to instruments, basic training, maintenance, analysis software and consultation. The facility serves as a focal point for Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science (AFNS) researchers to facilitate integration of the latest genomic technologies in their research programs. The facility is located on the University of Alberta main campus, in labs 4-32, 4-35, 4-38, 4-54 and 4-56 of the Agriculture/Forestry Centre.
Dr. Urmila Basu manages the core labs (Genomics Unit, Chromatography facility, Proximate Lab), Plant Growth Facilities and Stores in Ag/Forestry, Natural Resources Analytical Laboratory in SAB and Human Nutrition Research Unit in LiKA Shing. She provides consultation and training for functional genomics projects and applications to support multidisciplinary research programs. With her extensive experience in the areas of next-generation sequencing, genomics, and proteomics, she has contributed to several high-throughput research studies.
Our mandate
- To provide training for carrying out genomic and proteomic experiments, including experimental design, protocol development on the related equipment, assistance in data analysis, interpretation and method troubleshooting. Users are strongly advised to discuss their project goals prior to embarking on the use of any platform.
- To provide access, training and assistance to students, postdoctoral fellows, technicians and visiting scientists with regards to integration of specific techniques and methodological approaches into existing programs and projects.
- To manage the use and sharing of these state-of-the-art instruments. In order to maintain the longevity and proper functioning of the equipment, each user must undergo basic training before being allowed access to the instrument.
- To serve as a teaching resource facility, including labs for basic and advanced molecular tools for graduate courses.
